Welcome to St. Andrews Episcopal Church in downtown Bryan, Texas. We welcome you to join us for worship at one of our three services: 7:30, 9:00 or 11:15 a.m. We invite you to learn more about our vibrant parish, and how we are making Christ known in a variety of ways.

The community is invited to attend St. Andrew’s Downtown Dialogue series focusing on Comparative Religion. The Rev. David Hoster, Interim Rector of St. Andrew’s, is our speaker this month. Participants are invited to bring a brownbag lunch, desserts and drinks will be provided.

On April 26th St. Andrew’s offered the first in this series for parish and community members. Rabbi Peter TarlowDirector, TAMU Hillel Foundation. Rabbi Tarlow shared his faith perspectives on questions such as “Why do bad things happen to good people?” and faith & social responsibility. “Once in a while, we need to realize that we can’t blame ourselves for everything that happens in the world,” Rabbi Tarlow noted. “It’s our job to to the best that we can, and if we’re doing that, then we need to let God take care of the rest.”

The series will continue in June and July, with different faith-groups represented.

Neal scholars

On Thursday, May 24, St. Andrew’s recognized 10 fifth grade students receiving the St. Andrew’s Neal Scholar award at Neal Elementary. Since 2007, St. Andrew’s has given $1000 scholarships to the selected fifth grade students, Thursday’s scholarships marked $58,000 that St. Andrew’s has given to the fifth graders over the years.  Dr. Lewis Ford, St. Andrew’s /Neal Liaison, notes that while Neal is a low-income school, they are an excellent school. “The idea is to get in their heads that they have a lot of talent and can do a lot of things, and (the students) need to continue their education… the scholarship puts the seed in early.”

The students are chosen based on academics, community service, attendance, caring for others, and an essay.  Many students will become the first in their family to graduate from high school. The students expressed their excitement and surprise, and the parents beamed with pride.  Fifth grader Jennifer Alvarez, scholarship recipient, says “I’m really proud that I won this scholarship,” she said. “I never thought I was going to win one. It’s a big surprise for me and I’m going to keep working so I can improve.”

Ford said that the scholarships are an example of what the gospel tells us to do.. “to reach out and help people.” This will help make the community a better place, Ford added.
