Our History

Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church was founded on December 10, 1867, when George Haswell and seventeen others organized the parish in Bryan. The congregation first gathered in nearby Millican, but after a yellow fever epidemic and the decline of that community, the church moved north to Bryan, where it has remained ever since. The first church building stood at what is now the intersection of Highway 21 and Parker Street.

Our current church building was dedicated in 1914 by the Bishop of Texas, the Right Rev. George Kinsolving, and continues to be a place of reverent worship and gathering. Over the years, the campus has grown to support the life of the parish, including the addition of a parish house in 1920 and the acquisition and transformation of the Plasek Building into offices, a parish hall, and ministry space.

Faithful stewardship has shaped Saint Andrew’s across generations. In 1968, parishioners established the Saint Andrew’s Endowment Fund to support the church’s long-term mission. Beginning in 2004, the parish undertook significant improvements to the campus, including restoration of the organ, the addition of a columbarium, expanded parking, and enhancements to both the church building and grounds.

In more recent years, Saint Andrew’s has continued to grow with intention and prayer. The Cornerstone Strategic Plan (2011) and Building the Beloved Community plan (2016) reflect a shared commitment to deepening discipleship, strengthening community, and serving our neighbors.

In 2017, the parish joyfully celebrated 150 years of ministry, giving thanks for the generations who have built and sustained this community of faith.

Saint Andrew’s has been shaped by faithful leadership, including six rectors over the past six decades. The Rev. Daryl T. Hay has served as rector since 2013, and the parish continues to form clergy for the wider Church through the curacy program, while also fostering discernment and supporting parishioners called to ordained ministry.

Throughout its history, the people of Saint Andrew’s have lived out their faith beyond the walls of the church. Parishioners have helped establish and support organizations that serve the Brazos Valley, including local foundations, healthcare initiatives, arts organizations, and outreach ministries. Many continue to serve through partnerships with schools, nonprofits, and community groups.

From its beginnings in a small Texas community to its life today in Bryan-College Station, Saint Andrew’s remains rooted in worship, growing in faith, and giving in love.
